What tent and sleeping bag would you suggest for ultralite backpacking?

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

I’m looking for a tent that I can take backpacking with me and it needs to be fairly light, same with the sleeping bag. Also, the price needs to be fairly affordable. About £150 for the tent and the same for the sleeping bag.

Best 2 Man Backpacking Tent?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I’m looking for a lightweight, reasonably priced (if I can find it used all the better) 2 man backpacking tent. Waterproof is an absolute necessity, as is enough room for 2 large adults and 2 big packs. If there is a lightweight 3-man that you’d recommend please do. We are backpacking newbie’s and are looking to buy something that is versatile, will be used mostly in summer with some late spring, early fall use. Thanks!

Eureka or Coleman make reasonably priced, reasonable quality tents. You can pay a lot more and may or may not get a higher quality product. With backpacking it’s all about the weight, sometimes better quality means a lot more weight and just isn’t necessary. I don’t mind replacing my tent every few years if it means carrying less weight every time I use it.

You will need a four man tent to have ample room for you and your backpacks. I use 2 man tents and have enough room for myself and my pack. I wouldn’t be able to sleep comfortably with my wife in a tent advertised as a 2 person. Most 2 person tents are not much larger than a twin size bed in width.

Unless you want to share a tent, you might want to each carry your own shelter, would probably save some weight. Maybe one person carry a small tent and the other carry a large tarp that can be used in conjunction to create a large sheltered area. I don’t carry a tent at all except during mosquito season, I use a tarp for ground cloth or shelter as needed.

3 Man lightweight backpacking tent?

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

I am doing D of E and the equipment we get lent is ATROCIOUS! Think wrong poles, ripped flysheets and ripped groundsheets. So, I need a light-ish 3 person backapcking tent, suitable for 3 seasons. I have about £100 to spend. I have looked at the "Coleman Avior X3 Exponent". Have any of you got it, and is it any good?

This is a great tent in your price range and will get you there and back for years. I would stay away from the coleman. They were a great company but in recent years they have gone way down in quality.

Using tarp for a tent while backpacking with the kids.

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Went backpacking with the kids at Guntersville state park. We hiked for a while and found a great spot on the water to pitch our tent which is just an old cheap blue tarp. Cooked Johnsonville brats with my alcohol stove made from a pop can. Fished with a cane pole and generally had a blast being outdoors.

Can someone recommend a good light backpacking tent? Thanks!?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Can someone please recommend a good backpacking tent? I would like it to have the following:

* less than or near $200
* spacious 2 person that can comfortably hold a 6′2 well built
guy (or small 3 person)
* three season
* light (less than or very near 6 lbs)
* freestanding
* breathes well: does not form much/any condensation on the
interior

Thanks for your help!

The REI Half-Dome is perhaps the most popular free-standing 3-season 2-person backpacking tent in the US. It routinely gets good reviews in Backpacker magazine and has averaged 4.5 out of 5 stars on Trailspace.com user reviews.

I have had many tents over the years and it is easily the best 2-person that I have had – roomy, 2-doors, large vestibules, relatively light, easy to setup and well designed.

You can get them online from REI for $169 (see link below). Floor dimensions are 90×54 inches and minimum packing weight is 5lbs 1oz.

They also make a slightly smaller and lighter (and more expensive) version called the Quarter-Dome. It is still 2 person, but you had better be really good friends. :)

Has anyone tried using a tarp instead of a tent while backpacking?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

How is it? Any bug trouble?

yes
it was pretty cool but we did it on an 80 degree summer night, and nowhere near water (no mosquitos) so it was pretty amazing, very little bug trouble where we were at, if u are gonna, the i think you should set up a distraction for the bugs hang a white sheet up bout a rock’s throw away, and leave your flash light on on it all night bugs will go o that instead of you, ive trried it, works like a charm
