It depends on where you’re hiking. Where I live, there are rules about camping on state and federal land. If you’re on an established trail that allows camping, there are usually set camp sites along the way. Find a guide book or website with info about the trail, and see what it says.

Sheltered from the wind, near water if possible, slightly higher ground so you can stay dry if it rains in the night. Stay above the high water marks of rivers and streams even if they are dry. The water can rise rapidly if it rains even from storms upstream that you don’t even know about.

Choose your campsite carefully. For privacy, select a secluded camp, screened from roads and other human activity. Two hundred feet separation and dense natural screening is considered an ideal. Also establish a campsite’s size appropriate to your needs and, when through, as well as possible, return the area to its natural condition. Protect the environment by avoiding delicate meadows, streams, and river banks. Check with the National Forest for specifics concerning campsite selection. Some forests require campers obtain a no-fee "permit" while others limit locations to protect endangered flora and fauna.
