Article by Damien R Clarke

Hiking has become a favorite recreation for people of all ages. Hiking enables you to go beyond the well-traveled areas and see the more remote areas of the great outdoors. Given that you’ll likely be far off the beaten track, you’ll want to carry your equipment with you so you’ll be comfortable overnight.

This may sound exciting (and it is), but you have to have all the right gear before you go. Most importantly, when it is time to get out of the storm or stay warm at night, a good quality hiking tent will be needed. It’s easy to find a good one, all you have to do is know what you’re looking for when you go and buy one.

You’ll be carrying all the necessary gear for cooking, sleeping, and eating in your backpack. With that said, it makes sense to say that your hiking tent should at the very least be lightweight. Other features of a hiking tent should include:- Tightly sealed so that it’s waterproof on the bottom- Tent poles manufactured from ultra light materials- Generous head room – getting dressed is so much easier- Sturdy structural frame – you don’t want to blow away when the first gust of wind comes along- No-wick construction – keeps the water outside- Quick to set up – color coded poles are useful- Excellent ventilation- Pockets inside for storing gear- Accessories such as a rain fly, guy lines, and tighteners

Putting together a hiking tent is simple, and of course taking it down to store it away is just as easy. The main thing is for a hiking trip you will be looking for a portable tent. One of the major areas you should think about is how many people will be accompanying you on this trip. Why? Well, the more spacious it is for everyone, the more comfortable you will be throughout the duration.

Types of hiking tents vary and come in different sizes and shapes. Dome tents, skinny tents, pyramid tents, and diamond-shaped tents are just a few of the hiking tent styles available on the market today. Some of the tents feature mesh enclosures instead of actual fabric to lessen the weight of the tent. These are ideal for hot weather climates.

Speaking of weather, this is something that should always be considered when getting ready to hike, camp, or explore. Obviously you will be carrying several items, so you want to make sure you have a good amount of space and lessened weight for your gear. The ideal weight for your tent will only be 1 -2.5kg.

Consider spending a bit more on a hiking tent to make sure you have all the features and accessories to make your overnight stay(s) comfortable. If you’re in the middle of nowhere and your tent floods during a thunderstorm, it’s not as if you have a warm, dry vehicle sitting in the carpark as a backup. Cost is always a factor, but don’t skimp on a quality hiking tent. You’ll be thankful you spent a few extra dollars to stay warm and dry or as cool as a cucumber, whichever the case may be.

Once you’ve found just the right hiking tent, you’re ready to get packed and get hiking!

The {huge range of choices|range of choices is overwhelming and that|amount of choice} makes it confusing {initially|at first} but {life has been much easier since it was sorted|conveniently they can easily be categorized|it can better be understood by categorizing them} in two ways.%KEYWORDSTART1%s {are sorted by|can be sorted by|are categorized as first their by} function {and|followed} by structure. {As an example|For example,|An example of this is} hiking tents being {sorted|divided|categorized|identified} by season where tents are either 4-season or 3-season tents. {These|This} can then be further {sorted|divided|categorized} by the number of {bodies|people} it can {hold|fit}.{The expression “3-man” soon turned to “3-person” and “4-man” to “4-person”|The “3-man” and “4-man” tent came to be known as “3-person” and “4-person”} and even to solo, duo, trio, quartet and so on. But this {means that there is need for a more|demands a much more} cynical way of looking at the {tags|description}.This is because what {some manufacturers|some producers|some makers|manufacturers} mean by a 3-man hiking tent is a tent that can accommodate 3 small human bodies laid out like corpses.
Hiking tents are available in every size and shape you can think of. In order not to leave you confused, they can still be classified according to their characteristics so you’ll know what to look for in a specific hike. They are generally made up of poles so they can compose an outline and a skin or tent fabric to form the inner pocket.

Hoop Tents: To create a tubular pocket, you can use up to three hoops for the tent cover. Using the same ground surface, you can get a larger volume from the curved walls. These hiking tents are amazingly strong since they split pressure over the full-length hoops.

Traditional A-Frame Tents: The classic backpacking tents are of this type. Create a triangular pocket by putting two-legged frames at the outer ends of the tent together with its cover.

Avian Hiking Tents: These are usually used as fast housing under light weather conditions. You can use a single or double straight poles as you outstretch the tent cover for your cover ground area.

Pyramid Tents: Take one central pole. Firmly drag the tent cover then unfold it to make a pyramid-shaped pocket. However, these hiking tents are not always being used because the center pole forcefully breaks up the tent into numerous little rooms.

Modified A-Frame Tents: They basically have the same set up as the traditional hiking tents, only that, for this one, you can simply add a ridgepole and a center hoop. Definitely, this will give you a larger volume.

Wedge Tents: In crafting square to round pocket, you can use two crisscrossing hoops with your tent cover. These hiking tents are the most popular ones since they are sturdy and they use the least number of materials, thus having less weight too!

Dome Tents: To form this multi-faceted floor with the dome, three or more intersecting hoops and a tent cover are needed. They are stronger than the wedge hiking tents because they initially have more hoops. The only catch is that they are much tougher to put up than the other tents.

Aside from the common structures mentioned, there are still numerous hybrid hiking tents that use combinations of the techniques above. They are do so in order to experiment on the strength of the tents and also to produce tougher output.

They are definitely heavier than a one-person backpacking tent – by nearly 2 pounds but on shorter trips to me the weight is worth it to have plenty of room. But theres room for two adults sleeping on standard-size mattress pads, albeit cozy. While great couples tents, these are perfectly fine and big enough for two macho types to share on the trail without danger of losing their masculinity, but youll be inches away from a snoring partner. If you have any questions about these items or any of the gear we rent, visit www.lowergear.com or give us a call (we get paid by the hour and love to chat) – 866-994-4537. See you on the trail!
